Sounds like maybe you are using Qemu without KVM?
Is running qemu with the "--enable-kvm" option better?

"--enable-kvm" used to be the default in qemu-kvm, but maybe this changed
(I haven't been following the discussion in this area).

It's the default.  But maybe it broke somehow?

Try 'info kvm' in the qemu monitor (alt-ctrl-2).
