So, the two mentioned patches on top of 2.6.37.3 makes the problem go away, -- guest runs flawlessly with the two patches applied. I had to apply kvm_host.h change manually since there's one extra #define (KVM_REQ_APF_HALT) which is not present in 2.6.37.
