That was not my experience, as reported in my post a few days ago ("800x600 max resolution"), nor is it the experience reported in the message that kicked off this thread. I have been able to get a higher resolution, but it was far from automatic. I believe the root cause is the failure of the virtual monitor to respond to or provide EDID (?) to tell the kernel available screen resolutions, sync values, and similar information. I recall seeing an open bug on this, not sure if it was kvm or qemu. I also recall it had been open for a fairly long time.
