Ok, this is a 100% false alarm.  The problem was on the host,
the machine apparently has broken clock, to the extent when
ntpd wasn't able to keep up with it and was forced to step
it every so often.  After installing adjtimex on the host,
which offered adjustment of 209 sec/day, everything went to
normal again.

These time issues are driving me nuts ;)
