I believe I could reliably reproduce with 4.14.16 and prior as I reported
above. 

I have now been on 4.14.21, 4.14.22, and 4.14.23, and I believe I am no longer
seeing symptom since 4.14.21. Nothing leapt out at me from the change logs. I
have been on 4.14.22 and now 4.14.23 for around two weeks without experiencing
the hang whereas I could easily reproduce in minutes before.

Can anybody who experiences this issue check to see if Linux 4.14.22 or Linux
4.14.23 solves the problem for you?

Also please note that I have been using Fedora kernels, which means it is the
upstream version plus the Fedora patches. I have had to drop some of the Fedora
patches with the most recent versions as several of these patches are already
upstream, and the implementation may not match up. If all of you are also use
Fedora kernels, it's possible that the issue is with one of the Fedora patches?
