40% reduction is what I also observed for v1, to be specific - 42%.
So I was surprised when found v2 slower than vanilla kernel. Did you
observe 40% reduction for v2 or v1, or both?

I also think to switch to *cycles* as it (doubtly) might be CPU
frequency scaling issue, and do some profiling.
