NASA INVITES MEDIA TO VIEW BMW HYDROGEN 7 VEHICLE AT KSC

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. -- Media will have the opportunity to view a BMW
Hydrogen 7 vehicle at Kennedy Space Center's Press Site from 1 to 3
p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 8. A representative from the manufacturer, BMW
of North America, and H.T. Everett, NASA fluids manager for
propellants and life support, will be available for interviews.

An eight-week test period of a fleet of BMW Hydrogen 7 vehicles has
been successfully completed. The tests, which were initiated under a
Space Act Agreement between NASA and BMW, illustrate the
organizations' shared commitment to advancing hydrogen technologies
and exploring innovative transportation concepts and alternative
energy sources. Kennedy Space Center is one of the first
organizations to test drive the vehicle in the United States.

"We are pleased to partner with BMW to test their vehicles and explore
alternative fuel sources," KSC Director Bill Parsons said. "This is
using tomorrow's technology today."

The vehicle is fueled by liquid hydrogen, one of the propellants used
in the Space Shuttle Program. The BMW Hydrogen 7 uses a liquid
hydrogen storage tank and a hydrogen-fueled combustion engine. During
the tests, the fleet of vehicles used Kennedy Space Center's liquid
hydrogen reserve which was on hand to support mission STS-117 in the
event of a launch delay. Liquid hydrogen will boil off and dissipate
if unused.

Media representatives who are accredited to cover space shuttle
mission STS-118 launch activities do not need to apply for
credentials to attend the event. Non-accredited media who are U.S.
citizens must apply for credentials by 4:30 p.m. EDT Tuesday, Aug. 7,
via the Web at https://media.ksc.nasa.gov. Business e-mail
addresses, rather than personal accounts, must be supplied when
applying for credentials. Once accreditation is approved, applicants
will receive confirmation via e-mail.

Additional information is available by calling the Kennedy Space
Center Newsroom at 321-867-2468.
