10.13.06 Tracy Young Kennedy Space Center, Fla. 321-867-2468 MEDIA ADVISORY: 64-06 NASA INVITES MEDIA TO VIEW NEXT SPACE STATION COMPONENT NASA's Kennedy Space Center, Fla., will hold a media opportunity on Friday, Oct. 20, to view the next element to be added to the International Space Station. The Port 5 truss segment is scheduled to launch aboard Space Shuttle Discovery on mission STS-116 no earlier than Dec. 7. The truss is the next addition to the 11-segment integrated truss structure that will eventually span more than 300 feet. The P5 truss is approximately the length of a small compact car and will serve as a spacer connecting the larger P3/P4 and P6 truss segments. Additional payloads include a cargo module containing supplies, equipment, experiments and replacement parts, and an integrated cargo carrier which will deliver service module debris panels to the station. The panels protect the station's Zvezda service module from micrometeoroids and orbital debris. During the event, NASA and Boeing mission managers involved in processing the element for flight will be available for a question-and-answer session. The P5 truss is expected to be loaded into a transportation canister at the end of the month in preparation for its journey to the launch pad in early November. Media planning to attend the event should arrive at Kennedy's press site by 9:30 a.m. for transportation to the Space Station Processing Facility. Media without permanent Kennedy credentials should submit their request via the online accreditation Web site at: https://media.ksc.nasa.gov Since the Space Station Processing Facility is an operational area, all who participate must be properly dressed in full-length pants, flat shoes that entirely cover the feet and shirts with sleeves (no tank tops).
