Note to Editors:
SPACE SHUTTLE DISCOVERY MEDIA WORKSHOP, TOUR SHOWCASE ITS PROGRESS FOR RETURN TO FLIGHT

An informative media workshop and tour of the Orbiter Processing Facility (OPF) housing the Space Shuttle Discovery at the Kennedy Space Center is set for July 23.  During this event, media will receive the latest information on Discovery’s processing and view workers preparing the vehicle for its safe Return to Flight scheduled for March 2005.

Technical experts are leading workshops addressing Reinforced Carbon-Carbon and vehicle instrumentation from 9 - 11 a.m. at the Press Site Auditorium.

Following this session, reporters will tour the OPF to see work in progress on Discovery, including reinstallation of the Reinforced Carbon-Carbon panels on the Shuttle's wing leading edge, wiring inspections and instrumentation updates being completed for Return to Flight. NASA Vehicle Manager Stephanie Stilson will be available to discuss the work and answer questions in the OPF.

Media tours are divided into three afternoon sessions. The first and third sessions for print reporters and still photographers depart the KSC Press Site at noon and 2:30 p.m., EDT. The second session for TV reporters and videographers departs the Press Site at 1:15 p.m. Space is limited. Access is granted on a first-requested basis and is limited to two persons per organization.

Media attending this event must contact the KSC Press Site (321/867-2468) by close of business July 21. The sessions will not be shown on NASA Television.

Media who do not currently possess KSC credentials should submit their request via the new on-line accreditation Web site at https://media.ksc.nasa.gov/  Media may also fax (321-867-2692) or e-mail kandy.t.warren@nasa.gov and include the following information:
