KSC Employee's daughter Receives NASA Scholarship
Cristina Lopez del Castillo, a participant in last year’s Summer High School Apprenticeship Program at Kennedy Space Center, is the recipient of an NASA College Scholarship. Awarded from the NASA College Scholarship Fund, Lopez del Castillo will receive $8,000 annually for six years. She was one of five recipients Agencywide for 2004. Cristina is the daughter of NASA employee Eduardo Lopez del Castillo.
Cristina graduated from Melbourne Central Catholic High School in May 2003 and finished second in her class. She is currently attending the University of Miami majoring in biomedical engineering. She’s accomplished numerous academic achievements including receiving a National Merit Scholarship, an academic scholarship in college and National Honor Society recognition.
Cristina is truly a lifelong member of the NASA family. Eduardo Lopez del Castillo started working at KSC as a Graduate Co-op at the time of her birth 19 years ago. Eduardo is currently employed as a NASA Mechanical Engineer and the family lives in Port St. John. Eduardo said living near KSC has “given Cristina the opportunity of being surrounded by a pioneering spirit which planted the seeds of academic excellence, kindness and leadership that are beginning to produce fruits in her life.”
The NASA College Scholarship Fund was established to award scholarships Agencywide to qualified dependents of current and former NASA employees. It is the direct result of a substantial unsolicited gift by noted Pulitzer Prize-winning author James A. Michener. Many NASA employees contributed to the fund either directly or through the Combined Federal Campaign.
