NOTE TO EDITORS/NEWS DIRECTORS: PRESS OPPORTUNITY WITH RETURN TO FLIGHT TRACKING CAMERAS AND IMAGE ANALYSIS FACILITY SCHEDULED AT KSC ON OCT. 8
An opportunity for the news media to be briefed on and to see the improved tracking cameras and long-range optical tracking systems for Return to Flight Space Shuttle Ascent Imagery is planned at KSC on Wednesday, Oct. 8. The agenda for the day is as follows:
9 a.m. Briefing by Robert Page, chair, NASA Intercenter Photo Working Group, on the new cameras, long-range optical equipment and tracking site locations to be used in the Space Shuttle Return to Flight. There will be additional background on the Return to Flight plan since the briefing at JSC. Also briefing with Robert Page will be Armando Oliu, lead, KSC Ice and Debris Team, on the capabilities of the KSC Image Analysis Facility and the associated engineering evaluation of images and video taken during launch.
10:15 a.m. Buses depart for tour. At Pad 39-B media will see a launch pad perimeter camera site typical of the short range optical tracking locations used during liftoff. A Photo Sonics high speed 35 mm motion picture camera will be shown. Media will also be taken to the Vehicle Assembly Building to the Image Analysis Facility for a demonstration of the equipment used for the frame-by-frame review and analysis of the launch and ascent imagery.
11:45 a.m. Lunch break
1 p.m. Depart press site for the Playalinda DOAMS optical tracking site located on the Cape Canaveral National Seashore. This is a long-range facility operated by the Air Force Eastern Range. To be shown is the long-range optical telescope that has a 400-inch focal length primary lens and a 200-inch secondary lens.
- more - 2:30 p.m. Bus departs Playalinda DOAMS for Universal Camera Site 11 (UCS-11) located on the Merritt Island Wildlife Refuge. This is a new NASA medium-range optical tracking site location established for Return to Flight and is typical of those at 16 other locations. A Kineto Tracking Mount (KTM) tracking camera will be shown.
3:45 p.m. Depart UCS-11 for the NASA-KSC News Center.

Since the launch pad and Vehicle Assembly Building are operational areas that contain hazardous materials, those attending must dress in long pants and wear closed-toe shoes with low heels. Shorts and tank-tops are not allowed.
Media going on the tour to the various sites should be at the bus in the press site parking lot 15 minutes before departure. If necessary, Oct. 9 is the rain day for this event.
