EXPEDITION 7 CREW TALKS WITH NASA EXPLORER SCHOOLS EDUCATORS

Educators participating in NASA's Explorer Schools Program will have the opportunity to talk with the Expedition 7 crew members on board the International Space Station in an interactive educational program at NASA's Kennedy Space Center (KSC), Fla., on July 22.

Expedition 7 Commander Yuri Malenchenko and Flight Engineer/NASA International Space Station Science Officer Ed Lu will entertain questions from the educators during a downlink from the Station from 10:45 - 11:05 a.m. EDT.

The NASA Explorer Schools Program, launched on June 30, is a new NASA education initiative sponsored by the agency in collaboration with the National Science Teachers Association (NSTA). The program establishes a three-year partnership between the agency and 50 NASA Explorer Schools teams, consisting of teachers and education administrators from diverse communities throughout the country. The goal of the program is to increase student interest in science, math, and technology and enhance their knowledge of careers in those disciplines.

Five selected NASA Explorer Schools teams will participate in the discussion. The schools are Carol City Elementary School, Opa Locka, Fla.; Oscar Patterson Elementary School, Panama City, Fla.; Howard W. Bishop Middle School, Gainesville, Fla.; Stewart Magnet Middle School, Tampa, Fla.; and R. S. Bunche Middle School, Atlanta, Ga.

In addition to the interaction with the Station crew, team members will acquire new teaching resources and participate in a variety of hands-on activities in a week-long workshop from July 19-26 at KSC.

Media interested in observing the downlink and speaking with Explorer Schools team members, may contact Tracy Young at 321/867-2468.

The International Space Station program, provided via NASA downlink, is one in a series of downlinks to educational organizations across the country and abroad, and an integral component of NASA's Teaching from Space Program. The Teaching from Space Program, managed from the Johnson Space Center, facilitates educational opportunities that use the unique environment of human space flight. In doing so, the program builds partnerships with the education communities to create unique learning opportunities through the use of NASA research and educational technology.

The downlink will be broadcast on NASA TV, available via satellite through AMC-9, transponder 9C, located at 85 degrees west longitude, vertical polarization, with a frequency of 3880 Mhz and audio of 6.8 Mhz.
