Akonadi can use SQLite instead of MySQL, but it's not well-supported, and you still need the Akonadi daemons running anyway. Under the hood, the current version of KMail *is* a frontend to the email features of Akonadi. Even interaction with mail servers is done by one of Akonadi's daemons, not by the KMail process. -- Nicolás
