Owing to a misconfiguration on a new box I ended up with all my mail going there for a day or two, and managed to read it all in. The secret is simply to take your time reading through the list of alternative resource types. I don't have access to the resource definitions at this moment, but it's something straight forward like KMail Mail Folder, or maybe Traditional Mail Folder. When you find the most basic looking resource definition, just point it to /var/mail/userid.
