As a side note, the lack of USB Mass Storage is based in the technology used.

To mount the phone as USB Mass Storage the phone's memory first needs to be unmounted which isn't possible as it would render the phone in operable.

This is the trade off between having all space available for all apps or having some "externally" which a lot of apps can't use.

MTP doesn't require the memory to be unmounted first. However, MTP support on Linux doesn't appear to be as good as USB Mass Storage.
