FYI, kmail can also be configured to use a gmail pop account. I have it set up 
that way, and I have several pop accounts on a private server, yet it's not 
hogging my CPU at all, even with filters activated for virus scanning and spam. 
I'm running kmail 4.7.3 on a laptop, BTW.
