If this is a bug (I've seen this on my 4.6 a few times) then at least there is a workaround: Start your laptop without the having external monitor connected. When KDE is up, then connect. A message window should appear asking you whether to enable/adapt the external monitor. If it doesn't, start krandr (install before, if necessary) and follow instructions.
