There's clearly a lot of it about. You're not the first person to post
to a real mailing list without understanding how email replies work.

They've been standards compliant headers for decades. I suspect they
predate the internet. All mainstream email clients use them for
threading.

That's like saying: I know I'm right because it's how my Fisher-Price
computer does it.
