Certainly make it much more difficult. :-) It could only be fixed by a 
through examination of the code -- the code must have an error, 
otherwise it wouldn't be happening.

I have a hypothesis: It appears that it may be related to the 
configuration file.  I think that I did the upgrade from 4.4.2 to 4.4.3 
and then it happened.  So, it is possible that there was a change in the 
configuration file format and it didn't read correctly.  The result was 
that defaults were used.  I changed it back to my desired configuration 
and now the configuration file has the new format and it works.

I also note that I filed a similar bug report against KDE-3.<something>.
