When you start Dolphin there are a few pre-defined directories.  You can then 
simply drag any other directories you want into any place on the list.  You 
can also mount and umount usb drives there, which is quite useful.  At first 
glance I thought I wouldn't like Dolphin, but now I wouldn't be without it.  
Its many features are just not apparent at first glance.  Take a look at 
http://userbase.kde.org/Dolphin and especially the tutorial 'Discover Dolphin' 
linked near the bottom of the page.
