I don't have access to Mandriva just now, but I'm sure that their systemsettings will not be different from other distros'. On any *except* Common Colors in the drop-down list, you should have Normal Background and Alternate Background - probably at the top of the list. If you open systemsettings less than full-screen, it may not be obvious that Common Colors is actually in a drop-down list.
