Please, the original poster said that he is a newbie.  Little that has been 
said in this thread is helping him.  My own advice would be to stick to what 
his distro offers, unless there are very strong reasons for doing something 
else.  

I don't know the first thing about getting his fax modem working.  Is KPPP 
what he needs?
