Viability is an interesting word. OS/2 was "dead" many years ago, yet I'm
using it to write this (on a 16 month old system). I foresee KDE3 having a
similar "death", and KDE4 having all the success of DeLorean.
Lack of buttons to hide whatever KDE4 calls what used to be Kicker (Lord only
knows why the name needed to be abandoned) is fatal to me. I do a lot of
screenshots with KSnapshot, many of which must be a _full_ screen (save for
the button) of a single application window.

Until that's fixed, I have no use for KDE4.
Learning how to do too many things in KDE4 is easier said than done. I
installed openSUSE 11.2 with minimal X on several systems, added the optional
KDE3 repo, installed KDE3, and got back to actually being able to do things
using those machines. That leaves less time and incentive to figure out KDE4,
and still less to participate in KDE4 bug ironing.
Meanwhile I noticed on Distrowatch that CentOS has a fresh release featuring
KDE3, and consider that for future installs, even thought I've never used
CentOS before. Can you say "Serenity Systems"
