compose key suddenly fails

Folks,

with my openSuSE 11.1 box I use the X compose key to enter characters
like `ä' as

   <compose> " a

Until yesterday it worked always fine. After doing an update to the
current status of the KDE:KDE4:Factory:Desktop repository, it suddenly
fails. For example, pressing the above compose sequence no longer
gives me `a umlaut' but `C$'. Other examples are `ö' and `ü' which
now give `C6' and `C<', respectively.

This problem happens everywhere (konsole, konqueror, Emacs, yast,
etc.) except the URL window of Firefox 3.5.3. It seems that the
highest bit gets stripped...

Is this a known problem? It's extremely annoying...

    Werner
