The solution I used was to add the custom settings I wanted to apply to my ~/.ssh/config file. This file is very flexible, and you should be able to configure your connections however you want there. Once this is one, *any* ssh connection will use the settings as defined in that file. Just google for ~/.ssh/config for many examples how to set up this file.
