Accessing Places in Dolphin and File Chooser dialogues via keyboard

Is there a way to choose a folder from the Places in Dolphin and File
Chooser dialogues via keyboard? I have tried tabbing over to it, which
seems to work in Dolphin but not in File Chooser, however the lack of
a focus indicator [1] makes it very difficult to know when I've gotten
there. Is there a keystroke or combination that the user can press to
give Places focus?
