I'm the first to admit that I'm no guru, but it seems to me that there _HAS_ to be some other issue that's not coming to light.
Last summer we bought a network printer, HP 6300 Series. Our network is set up kind of weird. My computer is directly connected to the main router. The printer is connected to a switch connected to a secondary router that is connected to the main router. [ don't ask why it's set up this way - it just is ] To get the printer up and running through CUPS is super simple [ 8.04, 8.10, 9.04 ]. From the admin page click "Find New Printers" then just click through the prompts, put in my user name and password and it's done. Fast, simple and _EASY_. [ about one tenth the time my better half took with her windows machine ] Connecting to a printer that's connected to the same router should be a piece of cake.
Is there a possible problem with the cables, router, or the printer itself? CUPS can't "see" the printer so there has to be something blocking it. Can you beg, borrow another router and some new cables to try. Maybe a different printer.
It almost has to be one of those three. The only other possibility is that the 9.04 install is trashed.
We use _ONLY_ Linksys routers/switches and HP printers. Others have given us problems over the years. We also change out the firmware in the routers [ DD-WRT ].
