[KDE 4.1.3] GUI effects without compositing

In KDE 3.5.10, I can have fading/animated menus and such (without 
compositing).  In KDE 4, I don't see any option to enable that.  I can't 
use compositing because it's too slow and unstable (since I have an 
ATI/AMD card).

Is there a way to enable simple KDE3-like effects right now?  If not, 
any plans for this in 4.2?
