are you referring to;

'control center > kde components > component chooser > web browser > \
  default component > (x) in the following browser' is set to firefox?

then it may be in kmail preferences that change needs to be made.

i do not use kmail now, but when i did, i believe i recall something to
such effect being there.

if above has not helped any, try this;

log on to;

http://www.google.com/advanced_search?hl=en

use this in 'all these words' [note double " at start and end];

 ""firefox" AND "kmail" AND "default""

or, to tighten search;

 ""firefox" AND "kmail" AND "default browser""

and you should find what you want.
