The only one I know about is Quanta+. http://quanta.kdewebdev.org/index.php 
for more. It has a VPL mode, that may be good enough to get this kid 
started. My guess is that if he is interested in this stuff, it will amaze 
you fast he will be able to make sense of the "raw" source view as well.
