Hmm.
In the submenu I can directly choose "Add applet..." which opens the applet 
selection dialog and on "add" it adds the applet to the child panel.

When I choose Configure panel, it opens the usualy dialog which is also 
embedded into control center and the comb box (drop down selection) already 
has the child panel preselected.
