Which distro?

What's the contents of your 
$KDEDIR/share/apps/sessions/kde.desktop file? Do the "Exec" 
and "TryExec" lines match the path to your startkde command?

How do you start KDM? Do you switch to runlevel 4 or 5 or do you 
start kdm from console?
