I haven't had a chance to test the behaviour you described, but if you'd prefer to use a different window manager within KDE, you can do it by setting the KDEWM environment variable before the session starts. One way to do this is to create a file in ~/.kde/env (create the directory if it doesn't exist) with the extension .sh, and put "export KDEWM=/path/to/your/favourite/wm" in it.
