Sorry, I am an advanced linux user, but not an expert. I do not know how to check your hints. I use Debian sid, with kernel 2.6.21 and KDE 3.5.7

Would you be so kind to tell me how to check your hints and fix the possible issue?

This should be the default behavior. Depending on our setup, e.g. kernel not
supporting inotify or KDE compiled without knotify, the responsible system
might need an external change watcher running, e.g. FAM or Gamin.
