Thanks very much for your help. Running 'kpersonalizer' helped me resolve the problem. I had to tick off the Theme sound, and it longer makes the sounds with every action.

In KControl (K Menu -> Control Center, or run 'kcontrol'), look under
Sounds & Multimedia -> System Notifications. Does that help?
(Alternatively you can try running 'kpersonalizer' again...)
