Trying to Upgrade

I have been trying to upgrade to Kubuntu Version 6.10
When I try to use the upgrade manager in KDE I get the message "Could not
read network connection list
/root..DCOPserver_dick-desktop_0"
I have a static IP address and am always connected to the internet.
My file reads "/root/.DCOPserver_dick-desktop_NODISPLAY"
When I open it up in Kate I
get "local/dick-desktop:/tmp/.ICE-unix/dcop5869-1167746112
5869"
What is my problem? (besides not knowing enough)
I raelly would like to do the upgrade. I do not want to do the install from
ISO because I am afraidI will lose much of my saved documents.
