keyboard settings and accented character not displayed

[pol <linux_milano@xxxxxxxx>]

Accented characters are not displayed by the kedit nor by the 'basket'
editor (although they are displayed correctly by the lyx editor)

My keyboard is set as 'us'.
Any clear doc around explaining how to assign a 'compose' key to insert
accented characters?
