Put sudo infront of the command and then type in your password when prompted.

using the konsole didn't work, it said I needed to be the superuser and wouldn't accept a password! Can you explain the repositories option to me and assume absolute ignorance on my part! Many thanks for the prompt reply,

When you want to install something and it is .deb then in konsole/terminal type sudo dpkg -i [file name]
There is easier way, you can download and install applications from repositories.
