disc mounting applet doesn't see my writer

Got two disc drives: 
DVD-ROM /dev/dvd symlinked to /dev/hdc, mounted at /dvd
DVD writer /dev/brenner symlinked to /dev/hdd, mounted at /brenner

Now the disc mounting applet only sees the DVD-ROM. How come?
