In ~/.bashrc of the new user, add: export KDEDIRS=<PREFIX_TO_KDE> export PATH=<PREFIX_TO_KDE>:$PATH and ~/.xinitrc of the user should have <PREFIX_TO_KDE>/bin/startkde .
