I eventually found the source of the error by looking in the kde bugs list. It is a specifically Mandrake problem. Mandrake tries to second-guess the version of autoconf to use. As a result it almost completely wipes a config.h file, which make it impossilbe for the file to compile. I have installed autoconf-2.59, and bypassed the file that caused the trouble (/usr/lib/ac-wrapper.pl). Kde-3.4.2 is now compiling nicely as I write. Thanks for your help.
