I've had application crap out if it finds a ?stale? socket or PID file.
Maybe this could be your issue. Look at it's config file and see if it
calls any of these.

Further to the above I find that I am also unable to edit any events.  I get
"Unable to edit incidence: it is locked by another process.  So now the
question becomes how do I unlock it?
