In KWrite, go to Settings -> Configure Editor, and at the bottom of the Open/Save page there is a "Backup on Save" section; uncheck anything marked there. You might have to do the same in Kate, but I think they use the same editor backend so perhaps not. -- Ryan Schultz -> floating point exception: divide by cucumber
