KDE hangs on login

Hi,

I'm running Gentoo on an Athlon XP with 1GB of RAM. When I log into KDE,
even as a newly created user with an empty home directory, as soon as
progress indicator comes up, my system hangs. I can then not even change
into a text mode console, but have to ssh into my machine to kill KDE. It
is possible to get around this problem, either by changing to a console
immidiately after entering the password in kdm, and changing back to X only
after KDE is finished loading, or by setting the simple progress bar as a
progress indidicator. In a possibly related way, I can reproduce the crash
by loading a web page in konqueror. The same thing happens with versions
3.3, 3.4 and 3.4.1. Anything I can try?

Thanks,
Wolf
