Font settings do not 'stick' between sessions

I use Control Centre to set my fixed width font to Bitstream Vera Sans Mono 
the various applications using fixed-width fonts change as expected, but the 
next time I log in it is back to Courier, even though the config files (e.g. 
~/.kde/share/config/kmailrc ~/.kderc) still say Bitstream Vera Sans Mono.  Can 
anyone give me any clue where to start looking for a fix to this problem?

I am using KDE3.4 on Gentoo.
