I tend to agree about hassles with upgrades - but this is not just a KDE
problem. For what it's worth here is my procedure. For this reason I prefer
clean installs.
I compile new versions of KDE from source using Konstructor. It is time
consuming, but automatic. The great advantage is that you can set the
installation directory to be what you like (I use /opt/kde<version>. So I
have the old and new versions sitting side by side. I then can set the
environment parameters KDEDIR(S) to point to the new version. This can be
done on a system level in /etc/profile or at a user level in $HOME/.profile.
One trick I have - try out the new version on a non critical user account.
Also make a copy of the .kde directory as (say .jeg) and start with a
spanking new .kde directory. Copy over the details from the .jeg to the .kde
directories. This will through up the nasties, but in an orderly manner.
If the worst comes to the worst, you can very easily return to the status quo
ante.
