Well that is all you would have to do if you configured kde correctly. 
Unfortuneatly some distros dont because they have their own preference for 
mixers.
However if you use kmix which is the default kde mixer and put it in your 
autostart folder with your options set correctly you will have a little 
speaker icon in your system tray just like windows and clicking it with the 
left mouse button will popup a slider just like windows.

Before asking such questions that have been answered a million times you would 
be doing yourself a big favour by reading your kde manuals (kdehelpcenter) as 
you will learn a lot of useful things that will make your life much easier.  
Then if you cant find an answer you should search through the kde list 
archives or do a Google Groups search where you will also learn many useful 
things.
