KMail - missing bodies

I have an IMAP account set up in KMail.  It used to work fine, but it has 
stopped showing me the body entirely. I can see the full list of messages in 
each folder, and the read/unread state is known and changes, but I cannot see 
a message body, in the "preview pane", or by opening the message.

How can figure out what's going wrong?
