I experienced the same problem when updating to KDE 3.2 on SuSE 9.0 Pro. 
Finally I did NOT update kamix from kdemultimedia3-mixer.xyz.rpm but anything
else. Sound still works. 
I would appreciate if someone could poste a better solution!
