Yes, it does take a few minutes to put together the incantation to make it 
work. man cdrecord is well written. There are commands to query the device 
capabilities, and that makes it a lot easier to put together the command. 
That might also indicate why k3b thinks it cannot erase. I just noticed an 
interesting k3b menu item: Help / System Check.
